Budgie isnt feeling well...

Question
Hello Amber,

I have found how to contact you at allexperts.com and really need help...

So here is my story: I've had a female budgie for around 5 years. A couple of weeks ago she started breathing strangely with a half-opened mouth, then, a little bit later, i have discovered a really bad looking wound under her wing. I don't know how long it has been there though... So right after dicsovering it I took her to a local vet (that was last week), he said she needs vitamins and that she breethes like that only because of the wound. I wasn't sure about that (i will study biology (then zoology) at university soon and i have  experience at working with animals...), but i did what the vet said.

However, it didn't help and the parrot is getting worse... She started losing weight and yesterday she couldn't fly and almost fell down. Today i didn't see her eating and she keeps losing water. I can't look at her without crying now... It all happened so quickly, only few days ago she was flying around, and now she just sits... :(

Any advice would be highly appreciated...

Looking forward to hearing from you

Jana

P.S. sorry about my english

Answer
Hello Jana! i am so sorry to hear about your little baby. Its always sad when things happen like this. Ok first things first, If she cant fly or perch then put some shreded news paper at the bottom of the cage that way she has a little comfort. Expose her to a heat lamp and give her a quit place to stay. Heat is the most important thing when dealing with a sick bird (do not let the heat lamp rise above 95 degrees) If shes drinking then provide her with weak black tea. (if shes not drinking suringe feed her) Set a bowl of steaming hot water next to her cage and let it evaporate. If the wound is bleeding, dab it with ferrous chloride. Sprinkle the ferrous chloride on a clean tissue, place over the wound, and hold agaisnt it with gentle pressure for about 60 seconds. Birds are very difficult once they get seriously ill. Her chance of survival is low based on what is happening to her. Even vets might not know the cause of these terrible sicknesses.
All we can do as owners is hope for the best. Try my advice above and by this point anything should help her or make her feel more comfortable. I hope she pulls through and i will say a prayer for your little baby to make it :) Good luck
P.S. your english is just fine :D
