My Budgie.

Question
Ok. Well, she's not mine. She's my nans. She use to be an avery bird. With about 15 other birds, in a large outside enclosure. However, she had an accident and can't fly. This happened about 2 weeks ago. My Nan is now on holiday and I have been looking after her for 2 days. So far, all I've noticed is she's very quiet and looks kinda lonely. I'm worried she's missing other birds being around her. I talk to her a lot, sing to her and I play her music - which she seems to like (She stands upright and looks around her and makes chirping sounds without seeming scared). I played her budgie sounds at one point which she was definatly replying too. Did this make her upset or what she happy chirping back to these budgies that wern't there?

Please help me. I want her to be happy. Nan dosn't come home for another week or so. And she is too scared to put the Budgie back into the avery.

Answer
Hi, Charle,

Why can't the bird fly?  This is what you need to tend to...find out why the bird can't fly any more.  You might need to take the bird to a certified avian vet for a medical examination.

Can you put this single bird in a cage near the other birds in the aviary?  Being next to them in a cage might make her happy.  She probably is lonely if the bird has been used to being with other birds.

Putting the bird back in the aviary would depend on what the problem is with the bird not being able to fly.  Perhaps whatever the problem is will heal itself in short time and you can put her back in with the other birds.  However, the best thing might be to take the bird to a bird vet to find out what the problem is and get treatment for the bird so she can return to normal.  If she hasn't healed in 2 weeks, it might be a serious medical problem.
