Question
I have a very active, loving, pampered parakeet that just may have an eye illness, though I am not sure. She has one eye that is perfectly normal and healthy, and the other has some crust around the perimeter. She does not show signs of any other illnesses, but I know that parakeet illness is very hard to see until it has progressed alot. Please write back!! Tinkerbell and I would both appreciate it!!

Answer
Could you send me a picture?  That would really help.

The most common issues with budgies and their eyes are mites/lice, scaly face or infections.

Mites/lice are the main cause of issues like scaly face.  Crusty sore spots on the face are a good signal you've got mites.  You can get a powder from a vet, and this will wipe them out.  They can't survive without a host, so once they're off the bird, the problem should heal.

If it's an infection (does she have some sort of discharge?), an antibiotic from a vet should take care of it.  Do not try over-the-counter remedies.  These are usually ineffective; they're pretty much watered down versions of what a vet would give you.

I would take her to a vet, and get it diagnosed before it progresses any further.  There's also an Ask a Vet forum here on AllExperts.  I would try asking there too if you want to know more.  I've told you pretty much all I can.  Just keep Tink cozy until you can get her seen.
