Biting Budgie

Question
Hi. We've had our budgie for almost eight months and he has recently
become aggressive towards us. He used to fly over to us and land on our
heads, sit near us, etc. We had to let a family member care for him during a
move for a few weeks. When we reunited with him he was initially very
affectionate but he has begun to be increasingly aggressive towards us,
attacking our fingers and bobbing his head, generally he seems to behave
towards us as he does to his toys. We don't know what to do. He gets plenty
of time outside the cage and with us. Should we get him a mate? Please help.
We love our bird and want him to be happy and loving again. Thanks so
much.

Answer
It could have something to do with him wanting a mate.  Bobbing of the head is a signal in males that they are after a mate.  They sometimes will try to nibble at things as they would a female.

Another possibility is that during his stay with your family member, he didn't receive the love and attention that he was used to, and he is still readjusting.  How long has it been since he's been back, and how long was he gone?

One thing you can try to get him to stop biting is wrap your finger in a band-aid first.  This will make it so that you can't really feel the bite.  If he's just doing it to be mean, which I doubt he is because he was so nice before, he will stop because you won't react to it.

The best advice I can offer you is to be patient, and give him lots of love.  Whatever insecurities he's going through will pass and I'm confident that he will be his normal self again soon.
