Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have a parakeet and she laid eggs.  The first one she laid
about 27days ago.
The last one she laid  probably 1 week ago. One of the eggs as of
today got a big crack
and the shell come out abot 30 % of the egg. What does it mean? I am
thinking that they are fertile because she sits on them all day and night
but I am not sure what is the difference in the look of fertile eggs
from unfertile eggs?

ANSWER: Hello Kamma and thank you for your post.
Do you have a male parakeet also?  If you just have the one bird, then the eggs are not fertile and she may be eating them due to a calcium deficiency.
If this is the case, make sure to give her some Avian Vitamins and put a calcium block into her cage.

Good luck and God Bless.

QUESTION: Hello, Thank you for your response. Yes, I have male parakeet. Since she laid eggs I kept the male in the different cage because she attacks him. She protects her eggs and she take care of them very good. She sits on them all night and day. She keeps them in order and carefully watchs for them.  This is the first crack with shell off for all 27 days.  For above reasons it will be hard to believe that she eat it. I give her Fish Bone for calcium.  How does the chicks come out of the eggs? With the time of the break of the shell or right away since the break of the shell?

Answer
Hello again Kamma.
It will usually take a day or so for the baby to work it's way out of it's shell. There is a "shell tooth" that the baby uses to break it's way out, then once it's out the "shell tooth" will fall off.
Please keep me updated.

God Bless.
