Question
i am almost 14 and was wondering if you could you please offer any suggestions on how to get my hens to hatch their own eggs. some of them are caged with dirt ground and get layer mash, any access feed, apples, anything they pick up outside and in the garden, and a lot of scraps from a restaurant and the house, and get let out in the yard every once and a while. some of the others are free range and roam the farm and the barn all day. The last chickens, the bannies, stay in a big room with 4 ducks, and 3 pigeons all night and on weekends they are let out at 8:00 am and put in whenever it gets dark. on weekdays their not let out until 3:45-4:00 PM and are put back in at dark. the free range chickens and bannies get anything from sweet feed, corn, layer mash, un-medicated chick feed, anything they pick up outside, oats, wheat, bird seed, goat, horse, or pig feed, apples, and any scraps from school or the restaurant or friends.if you have time please help me.

Answer
Unless your hens are the right breed and it is the right time of year they won't hatch the eggs. You need a good broody breed such as a silky or miniture cochin to hatch the eggs, and they will only go broody in summer. It doesn't really matter what you feed them. If you want eggs hatching this time of year you need to use an incubator.

Thanks for your question.
