Question
my mare of 5 years old is a pretty good horse as far as reining and stoping and backing up. but she seems to be a little slow to respond or even seems a bit hard at the mouth. i have used a tom thumb since she was 2 yrs old i trained her my self. do you have any recomendation on what to try to get her to respond a little faster or with less pressure. i don't want to be to agressive on her mouth though.

thanks
cory

Answer
Hi Cory!

I just answered a question like this and I am going to recommend the same thing again.  I just want everyone to understand I do not work for or benefit from the sale of these bits.  I just love them!

Go to www.mylerbits.com and check out a bit for your mare.

You can chose any mouthpeice and shank length.  They have explicit instructions in their book and video/dvd that can explain to you why their bits work so well and what would be best for you to communicate with your mare.

Start with a level 1 bit and move up if you feel it is necessary at a later date.  I own many of these bits and they have enabled me to break and train horses much, much more effectively and broaden their vocabulary so I can speak to them clearly and kindly.

You can also just Google "Mylar bits" or check them out on eBay.

It sounds to me like your mare is just running thru the bit because she is dead to it and it is time to get her out of this "baby" bit and into something a little more communicative.  This is really no big deal and you may have to experiment but, some tack shops online offer a rental period for Mylar bits.

Good luck and remember to always wear an ASTM/SEI approved helmet!
