spooking and napping

Question
I have owned my 10 year old gelding for 11months now.  when I first had him he was very spooky.  he spooked at everything and anything and not just when he was being ridden but also being led in the yard etc. To a certain extent I have solved this problem and he is not nearly as bad although he does spook at the most unsual things.  he will quietly walk past huge, noisy farm machinery then spook at a strangely shaped leaf!  i do give him a calming supplement which seems to have 'taken the edge' off. This I can cope with but I wonder if it is related to his napping problem.  When I have him out on a hack he will suddenly and for no apparent reason stop and refuse to go on.  I have tried all the usual methods, sitting on him until he gets bored and decides to move on (he doesn't - he would sit there all day), turning him in circles ( he takes one step forward then stops again), what seems to work best is talking to him while continually putting more leg on.  This works and he goes forward again for a few yards then stops again.  i am at a complete loss now.  i have even asked very experienced riders to ride him out and they get exactly the same! Help - what can I do to resolve this or am I wasting my time? He sometimes naps on the way home and in familiar surroundings too. He has a great nature but does sometimes need a firm hand as he can be a bit stubborn.I have contacted his previous owner who said this was never a problem! I have had him checked by the vet - no problems and have had his saddle and tack re fitted.

Answer
hi there, Sounds like you are doing everything I would do, I would perhaps try to be a bit more aggressive and give him a smack on the bum to make him move forward or perhaps you could try a sheepskin shadowroll? I find them very good for horses that look for things to shy at. just a suggestion..Let me know how you get on. Karen
