QuestionI just purchased a 7 year old QH and he is very afraid of people. He was the same way for the prior owner who only had him for 4 months. We don't chase him to catch him. We try to entice him with a treat to get him to come up to us. He tries to hide behind my other horse, who I have had for 5 months. When we are able to grab the harness, we pet him, scratch him, talk to him gently and sometimes give him a treat. He rides well, but spooks at some noises. I have to ride him on the road to get to the trails. I'm afraid he might buck or go out into the middle of the road when a car comes when I am riding him. I believe his timidness and spooking is just nervousness. I don't believe he has ever spent much time with humans. Can you please give me some suggestions?
AnswerHi Linda,
You have a very long road ahead of you. First I wouldn't ride this horse until he has lost his fear. He is a very dangerous animal in this condition and should not be trusted until he learns to become more confident.
It would be best to put him into a small paddock or yard(with daily access to a paddock for exercise)so that you can work with him on a 1 - 1 situation. It's a long process, gaining a horse's trust, and I suggest you find a good instructor or knowledgeble friend to help you. It's very hard to advise without seeing his reactions in person.
Good luck!
