angry, restless 6 yr old rescue

Question
I have recently rescued a beautiful 6 yr old Palomino.  He has had 7 homes and has been known to be "mouthy." He has been abused at a couple of his previous homes.  I am new to horses, but my sister-in-law is a horse trainer and is helping me.  He and I have really bonded, but he's still a handful.  I just wanted another opinion on how to handle him and hopefully get us both past his issues: when I say "mouthy," he grabs at clothing.  He's never bitten me.  He rears when he gets antsy.  He does not respect my space...when walking, he practically walks on top of me as if he doesn't realize I'm there.  Can you help??  Thanks so much! Cami

Answer
Hello Cami,
Sounds like you are on the right path...you cant be bitten or struck in your horse is a good 10 feet away. When you bring him out remember this is work time and you are the boss. Would Donald Trump give a job to someone you kept trying to lean on him? Or walked so close behind that when he stopped to talk to someone they ran into him? Work with your sister and get your guy good at backing up when you ask him, and try to stay mindful of where he is at all times. That is what a lead mare would do.
Best wishes,
