Question
Hi after not owning a horse for 7 years I recently bought a four year old traditional irish cob. He is wonderfull in every way EXCEPT he is always stumbling / tripping. I have had him checked out by a vet and a farrier and they can see noting wrong with him.

I would really appreciate your advice

thanks
Emma
I think it is a concentration issue. Yesterday we were walking into a field and suddenly i was gazing at the clouds - he was on his knees - I had fallen off the side. It not the first time. When I am working him hard he doesnt stumble at all. He is so good in every other respect.
I like trail ridding - I want to go on treks and relax and be able to trust him without constantly keeping my leg on. He doesnt spook and is very trusting in everyway.

ps I am from ireland, ride english style or bareback and vary where I ride every other day - sand arena, roadwork, fields.
Mr G has just gone four  (april) but was wild in Nov 07. He began training in January 08. He doesnt have balancing issues - eg trots and canters correctly and when asked, excepts the bit and has NO other vices, but this is really getting me down.

Answer
Some time a horse is never taught how to use their feet well.  If a horse is put in a stall a lot they will get more clumsy.  Work him in a round pen at different speeds, walk, trot and canter and have him change direction a lot.  That will teach him to use his feet and balance better.  Some time a rider will cause a lot of trips, a horse depends on the rider to stay balanced and out of his way, if the rider is not paying attention or gets off balance then that can cause a horse to trip.

When riding, do lots of hills, creeks, uneven ground work, all of that will help him improve his balance and get better when you are on him.
