Young Mustang

Question
Hi, I recently started working at a facility that takes in horses that have been abused or neglected. We have a young Mustang stallion that was assigned to me. Yesterday I put a saddle on him for the first time and her was great! He does however have a BIG problem with getting all over me and into my back pocket. When I cinched up the saddle he did not care and he was perfect. He lounged very well and followed directions the best that he could. I have never worked with a stallion or a mustang though. I personally own a Arabian that I trained, but I did not break him. I was wondering if there were antthing special that I would need to do with him.

That is a hard question to answer because each horse is different.  It sounds like things are going well for you so far.  The only words of caution I would give are these;  Mustangs are very smart.  That can be a good thing in that they learn quickly, a bad thing in that they don't forget.  My second piece of advice, work slow.  Horses - especially stallions - tend to do better if you set small goals and work toward small goals.  The trick is not to get them trained the fastest, but to get them trained the best.  That takes time.

I hope he keeps doing well for you!
