Question
I have a 7 year old mare that is green broke. She has about 21 hours of a rider on her. My problem with her is that i use a snaffle bit on her and she doesnt like to turn. She tries to throw me off and then when i want her to stop she keeps going and wont stop. She does what she wants to do. I need help

Answer
How much experience do you have with horses, and how old are you?

And are you really using a snaffle which is a direct rein bit, or are you using a shanked bit with a snaffle or broken or jointed mouthpiece?  I ask because too many people are using Tom Thumbs, or other shanked or curb bits, but mistakenly referring to them as snaffles because of the mouthpiece being jointed.

If she doesn't respond to your cues, then you will have to fix the holes in her training.  Whether or not she has been backed, or had a rider up, she doesn't know what she is doing, and she is ignoring you partly because of that and partly, I suspect because you aren't the leader herd.

Several questions before I can lay out a game plan here.

Do you have access to a round pen?  How is she to handle on the ground?  Does she know to give her hindquarters and forequarters, as well as move off of pressure?  Who was riding her for the 21 hours?  Will she back up for you from the ground?  Does she lead well?  How is she when you are feeding her?  Or grooming her?

And if you are using a snaffle, which will have no shanks, is is a smooth snaffle, twisted wire, or slow twist?  If you can find picture of what you are using in a tack supply catalog, such as Valley Vet, or the like, can you try and link it here?  That will help me know more about what is going on.  If you can't, no biggie, but describe bit best you can.  You may be correct and bit is O ring, offset Dee or Eggbutt, but need to know.

What type of saddle are you using, and does it fit her?  Have her teeth ever been floated?

What type of feed and hay is she getting?  Is she stalled, or turned out in pasture?  If stalled, how much turn out time does she get daily?

Do you know how to lunge?

Please answer these questions and if you can think of anything else, let me know that too.  I will then be able to understand more of what we are dealing with her, and be able to help you better.

Looking forward to answers.
