Question
I adopted a BLM mustang last month, 2 year old mare, she is very gentle and willing, have halter broke her and taught her to lead, lunges, sacked out, has had a saddle and bridle on and have got on her several times and teaching her to walk out.... the only difficulty is getting her to pick up her feet, she is fairly good with her front but the back feet she objects violently to having them picked up (any suggestions would be hugely appreciated as she needs her feet trimmed) thank you

Answer
Hi Kim,
Have you had her checked out to see if has any back issues? That would be the first thing I would do especially as she has done so well with the other things you have taught her. If it turns out she does not then the way I train horses to pick up their feet is to loosely loop a cotton lunge line around the bottom the horse's leg. While holding one end of the rope in one hand pass the other end  the upper part of the horse's leg. Make sure you are holding on to both ends. Then slide the rope down the leg until you get to the horse's pastern. If at any time the horse get nervous or moves all you have to do is drop one end of the rope. You want to tug on the rope so that she lifts up her leg. Just keep repeating this until she is comfortable with you doing this. Also depending on how long her feet are while you are teaching her to lift her back feet you might want to look into using a chute.
