Question
I have a six year old gelding. I have had him for about 2 1/2 years now and he is a very high spirited horse. I have never had any problems out of him till now. he was stolen from me and was gone for a little over a month before I got him back and now when I ride him he rides as always except he doesn't  want to rein anymore when I try to turn him he starts slinging his head from side to side and rearing up just really putting up a fight for some reason. I am using the same headstall and bit that I have always used. Do you have any suggestions of what might be wrong or how to fix the problem? Thanks

Answer
Hi Amanda,
It sounds like your horse was in the hands of someone who really didn't know how to ride or understand horses. Your horse has been through a traumatic event. So, I would suggest that it needs "rehabilitation". Rearing and fighting you is VERY dangerous and you get badly injured or worse. My suggestion is that you not take the risk or put yourself in a position to end up in the hospital. Take this horse to and experience, qualified trainer who can work with a problematic horse. It simply isn't worth you getting badly injured to ride your horse at this point. Let the trainer work with your horse and work through this mental problem he has. Remember, he has been through a very traumatic experience and needs professional help at this point...just as you would if you were kidnapped and treated in a bad way. I hope I have been of help to you. Please stay safe and good luck with your horse.
