Question
Hi, my name is Kristen and i have a 4 and 1/2 year old mare. When i'm done riding i usually just brush her off, walk her around and then give her some treats before putting her away. I was wondering where horses enjoy being "pet" or massaged the most so after i ride (or before) i can massage her almost as a "thank you for the ride" and to bond more with her. What are some simple massage techniques i could use?
Thank you. ~Kristen

Answer
Hi Kristen,

what a lucky horse you're going to have.

Massaging after your ride will be fine.  The techniques themselves are difficult to describe by 'word' and are best 'shown'.  You could hire a massage therapist to massage your horse once and then you could see the techniques firsthand and also learn where each one is used on the body.

There is a very good book called, Equine Massage by Jean-Pierre Hourdebaigt that shows and explains the different techniques.  You can find it on Amazon.

In the meantime to get you started, you can take your 'petting' (also called effleurage) one level up by using the heel of your palm and pressing firmly into the muscle.  This works good on the neck and hindquarter, areas of large muscle mass.  Work in the direction of the hair.  Each stroke press a bit firmer.  You can push quite hard into the deep muscle.  Stroke slowly and evenly.

There is no time limit, stop when you want.  If your horse starts to move around or get antsy, then lighten your stroke.  If your horse leans into the pressure, then press even harder.

Good luck!

Sincerely,

Lana Reinhardt
