A group of horses are generally called a herd. Herds are led by an alpha mare or lead stallion. Even a domesticated group of horses are called a herd. Herds also have apecking order in which the horses follow. If you watch them, one horse may eat all of the hay and not allow another horse in its way. This is usually the lead horse.
