Question
i have a foal coming up to a year old and wanted some advice on what ground work to do with her and at what age to start? ive been told 18 monthes for light ground work but that seems fully young?

Answer
Hello!
You can halter break her if she isn't already. You can start petting her everywhere, underneath her tummy, especially, to get her used to the girth one day. Also, touch her teets. You want her to be able to let you clean her teets later on without putting up a fight. That is very important. You can put a halter and lead on and bring her for a walk down the road. Yes, at the age of 18 months you can start ground work with her. You can even start slowly and lightly now. If you have an arena, you can take her in there, and let her run. That will create a bond between you and her, and can start proving your dominance. But yes, at the age of 18 months, I would start putting a bit of weight on her back. Like stand beside her, and put your arms on her back, and then slowly put more and more weight on her. But do not sit on her. This can be dangerous. Anyhow, good luck and have fun!
