Gelding Behavior Around Mares

Question
We purchased a 4 yr old horse from an auction.  He was gelded, but we do not know when/age.  He still acts like a stallion around mares. Should I have his testosterone levels checked?  Is he too old to "regeld" if necessary? & will it do any good at this age?  Please advise.

Answer
Dear Beverly,
Buying a horse from an auctin is usually filled with surprises. We have never bought a horse from an auction that didn't have at least one surprise.
If he was gelded late he will retain many of his stallion like characteristics. You definatly need to get him checked to make sure the gelding was done correctly and that his testicles acctually dropped. We have had at least 2 stallions that had testicles inside there body.
I would definatly check him in case he was recently gelded, if that was the case then he may still be fertile, and i'm sure if you would want a pregnancy in that case.
