Picking up horses feet

Question
I have a ten year old quarter horse which is very difficult about having his back feet picked up.  I had a farrier that could get his feet done, but it was never an easy task.  I am not a strong person, so it is difficult for me to try to hold his feet to pick them out when he jerks them away and slams them down.  He rarely kicks out at you but has in the past.  I am at my wits end with this otherwise awesome gelding.  People say I should drug him to have his feet done, but I can't help but think there has to be a better way.  Please tell me if you have any ideas.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Madonna;

Horses of this age, with this kind of issue, are usually in pain, possibly even arthritic.

Make sure you aren't lifting the feet too high...keep them as low to the ground as you can.  The higher you lift, the more it puts pressure on him.  Make sure you keep the foot underneath his body and aren't pulling it away to the side or too far back.

I would have a chiropractor check him over and I think you'll find he's sore in the hindquarter and possibly into the loin and back.  I've even had horses with sore shoulders be difficult with their back feet.

In the meantime, if you absolutely need to get him done, then tranquilizing him would likely be less traumatic than having a fight with him.  But, if he can wait, then try what I suggested about holding his feet very low and close to his body and have him examined.

Best wishes!

Sincerely,

Lana Reinhardt
