Question
Hi there i have recently taken on 2 horses from a sanctuary one a 16.1 warmblood, Walter and a 11.2 sec a Harry.

Walter is driving me mad...and i feel lost and useless!?

He comes to the gate when called but once in anyones presence he will JUST let you stroke his face and then trys to butt you/push you away and sometimes bite! I cant get his head collar on to do anything with him and when i take Harry out or bring him back to the field he goes for him, biting and kicking. He wont let you give Harry any attention but when you try to give him attention he simply seems to push you away??

Walter came into the sanctuary as he has kicked 2 owners in the past and injured them...but i dont have the full history behind these incidents???

I am at a loss and feel like sending him back BUT dont want to fail him or myself :-(.

Please advise asap as i am at wits end x

Answer
    Hi Lucy,
OK I get the message, it's pretty well panic stations. Unfortunately it is just after midnight, and I have only now seen your question. It is too late to give you a full answer, but I am sending this in the hope of getting you to relax.
This problem is eminently "curable", given the right conditions. The first thing you ought to know, is that he is simply being a bully. Then, I need to know what sort of facilities you have available. A round pen would be the ideal, but any small paddock would do. By that I mean a place where he would not be able to evade your influence, for more than a second or two. We are probably talking about a max. of 40m x 40m (depending on how nimble you are).
I think, that I may need you to send some sort of reply to this mail( even if it's only an acknowledgement), in order to get back to you. Otherwise the site may think that I am trying to answer the same question twice, and may not allow that.
Lastly, (in your own terms ASAP), I would like you to go on the Internet, and look up "Round Pen" techniques, so that you will know where I am coming from (ugh! I hate that expression,but...). Who knows, after reading a few articles you may decide that you don't even need me.
Please get back to me, and I will endeavour to give a full explanation of what is going on in this case, and how you can cure it.
Meanwhile, try to relax a bit.
       Slan,
