introducing new horses

Question
A week ago got my first horse Candy, an almost 1yr old filly.  She came from a family that had about 6 horses.  She's pretty spunky and is alone on my 27 acres which is all open and fenced off with barb. I have a opportunity to possibly get 3 more horses.  2 mares (about 16yrs old) and a baby of one of the mares(4 yrs) The older mares have been together for about 14 yrs. The 2 mares are broke, the 4yr is not. I hear the 3 are very gentle. Everything I have read on the internet tells you about introuducing one to the herd.  I need to introduce the herd to one. I don't have anyway to seperate them. My questions is how would you suggest introducing them? or is this just a bad idea altogether.

Answer
Dear Danette,
If you have 27 acres of land fenced it then it MAY be okay because if they fight the "loser" has a place to run off to. But becarefull because the 2 mares and the 4 year old have been together and have made there "own" herd, and may not tolerate others cutting in. If you have a stable that may be better because they can see and smell each other but not hurt each other. You should definatly find a way to get a small pasture within a pasture to help.
Barbed wire is not a very good option for horses, they can tangle themselves in it, there skin is much more sensitive then cattle and they can't "See" it when they are in a headlong gallop. Be carefull with barbed wire, i have seen some bad things come out of it.
