Question
I live in Emmett Idaho and  I have a 16 y/o Tennessee Walker mare she has had a very sudden weight  loss she had been to the vet and her teeth are fine no sore's in her mouth or on her tongue blood work looks ok she is able to drink water but she chew up her food and then it just falls out of her mouth the vet feels she just cant swallow it she he thinks it may be a CNS problem or a tumor she also has this chomp she does and slobers alot the vet thought it seemed like nervous chomp and looking back she has slobered much more than her full brother and has chomped for some time as in years but I never thought too much of it, it did not seem to affect any thing. Her wt loss has been inside of about 2 weeks and it has been guessing 200 lb's We are trying PCN. in the off chance it is some sort of infection, but her wbc's were fine,so do you or anyone have any ideas on anything that may help this poor baby I have had this horse since befor her feet ever hit the ground I was with her within hours of her being born and I also owne her brother. So if there is anyone who has ever heard of this before Please help me no to loose my baby before her time.                Sincerely Tracy Williams Desprate in Idaho

Answer
Tracy - thank you for your question.  I am so sorry that you are dealing with this situation with such a sweet, sweet horse!  You have covered all the bases that I can think of.  If your vet suggested a tumor, did they perform a scope of your horse's throat? I'm wondering if it's possible that your horse is experiencing choke?  The symptoms that you mentioned sound very similar to choke.  I really wish I could think of something else that it could be.  My heart goes out to you Tracy!
