Two Year Old Mare Not Traveling Properly!

Question
My two year old AQHA mare is still not traveling properly.
It was noticed in April that she wasn't traveling as she should and an equine chiropractor adjusted her back in a couple of places. It was said for her to remain at pasture. The equine chiropractor thought the problem to be either a pulled muscle or ligament.I also had the Vet check her out and the Vet agreed with what the equine chiropractor said and he gave her a steroid injection to help boost her appertite to build the muscle in the problem area. The Vet said she needed time to grow.
Well,it's three months now and she still travels with a funky hitch to her stride. It seems to be in the hip area.
Now she could've been bullied by one of the horses and that's how it happened or when she was playing I just don't know.
I think I'll get the Vet to assess her again.
I'm wondering what can be done now?
Will she ever be right?
Her condition is good now and she has put on good weight.
She just seems to have trouble catching her stride.
So how long do I give her if three months after the equine chiropractor and steroid injection she's a little better but not right?
Thanks.

Answer
Hi Irene;

If it is/was a soft tissue injury, those can take months and months and months to heal as they often get tweaked and reinjuried along the way.

I would have the chiropractor come out again and re-evaluate and make sure things have gotten better and she's not out of whack.

You still don't really have an 'answer' of what it is.  It's all conjecture and educated guessing.  Without knowing what it is for sure, it's difficult for anyone to come up with a therapy plan.  Soft tissue damage does often require turnout for long periods of time.  Depending on the damage and the extent of it, she may or may not ever be right.  You either have to dig deeper and consider ultrasound, possibly x-rays or something like thermo scanning, or you'll have to wait and see.  It is encouraging that she has improved some.

You might also have an acupuncturist look at her.

Best of luck!

Sincerely,

Lana Reinhardt
