Question
I couldn't find anyone with general horse knowledge.  and you profile looked the most general so im hoping you can help.  I have a 8 month old quarter horse mare, that has begun to have thick jaws.. almost like a stallion.  i shaved the area and the skin looks a little puffy around the jaws and throat, but not tight and swollen like loose and jelloy and swollen. hard to explain, im trying to think abscess or something with its teeth, but the horse is acting fine and eating like  well a horse.  i don't want to have to call out the vet immediately and have them be like well wait it out.... and we will see  and get a big bill   but i don't wanna cause anything bad to the horse.  kind of random i know but any idea?

Answer
Hi Terry.
I'm not a vet, but if you think anything of this filly, it's probably better to be safe than sorry. I'd rather call and be told to wait it out than to call later and be told "Why didn't you call sooner? This is serious!"
It's been my experience that some filies just don't look like fillies. You could try a jowl sweat with some furacin on her though. You can get the sweats (jowl) for under $20 in most tack shops. I doubt if a full neck hood is what you need or want, or that they'd have them small enough to fit her.
Best wishes with your filly! Let me know how you make out.
