Anne,
I have a 15 year old gelding who is half quarter and half arabian. My problem is that i cannot get him to take a bit and i don't want to use a hackamore. I try putting my fingers in his interdental space but he just won't budge. do you have any tips for me or know of any websites that would show me a trick or two to get him to take a bit?

Hi Nate.
  Let me start by saying I know next to nothing about riding horses. My first suggestion would be to have a vet or a dentist come out and check his teeth. I would also try wrapping your bit with some latex and dipping it in a little honey or molasses. Hold the bridle like you will be placing it on the horse with the bit directly in front of his mouth. With your other hand, put some gentle pressure on the area where the horse's upper and bottom lips meet. Usually, this will cause the horse to open his mouth.
