Question
i just bought a 3 year old mare/filly and her leg is bowed in at the knee. i was wondering if there was any kind of corrective shoeing that i can do for her and how much you think it will cost?! thank you

Answer
Hello Heaven...
Thank you for your question. First off...without being too
critical,you bought a horse with a defect.

If it's at a sale, it's always best to bring someone along with experience when buying. If it's bought from a private source, then ALWAYS have it Vet-checked to dodge problems that could cost you and the horse later.

You said "bowed-in'. When we think of bowed we normally think of like a bowed leg on a human ( bowing out). Because it's at the knee/carpus, there are two settings; varus (meaning turns or leans inward) and valgus (meaning outward)

At 3 years old the horse is "stuck" with that confirmation.
Before the age of 9/10 months I have been involved with
"stapling and periostal stripping" of the metacarpal/cannon bone that causes regrowth  or changing of the growth of the limbs in simple terms.
Corrective shoeing will NOT help at it's age. You would be only causing OTHER problems with the limbs, tendons and ligaments. Most equine are not fully mature till the age of 4/5 yrs. so you would be opening a "different-can-of-worms"
so to speak. You wouldn't want to buy-into the myths that a certain way of shoeing is going to help or make things better.

I wish for you better news and you can talk to any equine veterinarian and you would get the same answers.
I also wish I had better news for you. I thing to remember,
the horse is (I take it) not lame at the moment. If the horse is ridden alot or pushed BEYOND it physical abilities
then you could in time, see lameness or motion problems with your horse.

Again, I wish you the best with your horse!!
