Question
I am a very longtime horse lover (childhood dreams... :) ) but a brand-new horse owner. My 12 year old daughter and I just purchased our first horse (but not our last, I tell you) and we couldn't love her more. She was/is in kinda rough shape. She has only been mine for 1 week and already she is vaccinated (it was overdue), her front feet trimmed (she was badly overgrown and split in 1 place) and her teeth are being floated next week. I think she was neglected a bit and craves attention. My daughter and I want her treated gently and I do not want her hurt, but she's very lazy and my farrier wants me to let him hot shoe? her back feet because she drags her toes.... I don't like the sound of this one bit and was hoping to get your opinion...
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Shelby!  Thanks for asking!

I'm going to refer you to my website: http://www.barefoottrim.com  There's loads of info there that you can share with your farrier if wanted. Most of all I would suggest that you read through the educational articles there to afford yourself of what to look for in healthy hooves and so you can make an educated decision. You also might want to read through Gene Ovnicek's page: http://www.hopeforsoundness.  I think between those two references you'll find your answer.
