Question
Hi,My horse has a full set of iron shoes & is in training for English Saddleseat showing for the near future.(He's a NSH ,/90%Arabian).I believe its important to get a show horse out of the "rut "of.the arena & cross train on some trail work as appropriate.I live in S.Calif.,no snow/ice,&would only ride on mild to moderate rated trail, but I do.need to cross a few paved streets.I would like to try some hoof boots for protection & traction.Which type /brand are best?and do I need 4 or just 2 on front hooves. My horses hooves are of normal heighth & no weighted shoes.Just regular. Thanks!

Answer
HELLO ARLENE...THANKS FOR YOUR QUESTION...

FIRST off...I apologize for being late getting back with you !! My father passed away and my life and business went on hold for a few days. THANK YOU FOR BEING PATIENT !!

Most of my recommendations for boots, overshoes come with and for barefooted horses.
The fact you are from Cali and have steel shoes on tells me you take good care of your horse
on a regular basis.

Cross training is "great" for what you are doing and great for his mind as well!!
If you go with any kind of boots and being shod, you'd have to go a size larger because of the
"tightness" of going over the shoes. Also...most boots on the market are designed for trimmed
hooves and when you pull a shoe and need the protection for the wall and sole.

You might consider asking your farrier about putting studs in the shoes, if you feel you need extra traction...just a thought.

Generally, most of the time the shoes you have on will more than protect and support the
hooves enough to give you the training and exercise you want.
I would also just use them on the front hooves. That would be enough for what you are doing.

Thanks again for your patience...
Best to You...
