Painted Eastern Turtle Has Stopped Eating.

Question
I have a female painted turtle that is 4 years old. She was born in a pond and I had her from when she was only the size of a quarter. She is not 9 inches and has been healthy from day 1. She now has stopped eating and cannot get her to eat.
She eats the pellets from the pet s hop  (fluckers) and she also eats shrimp that i hand feed her. I have tried lettuce meal worms and changed her food. She is still active and does not seem sick. We  have changed her water and changed her basking light. She responds when I call her and her eyes are healthy looking.. Please I am at my wits ends.. I love her very much and don't know what to do.
Thank you Tammy

Answer
I don't see anything obvious here, so let's run some basic checks.

- Tank size. If the turtle is crowded, it will affect the appetite. Figure about 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle shell length. Small tanks are also harder to keep clean.

- Temps. Aim for about 75-80F in the water, 90F on the basking site.

- Food variety. Try about 1/3rd pellets, 1/3rd live or frozen/thawed 'fish foods'- small fish, shrimp, krill, worms, insects, beef heart, snails, and 1/3rd greens, like duckweed, water plants, and dark leafy greens.

If these are OK, then I need more info. I would recommend that you log into http://www.turtleforum.com where I and other keepers can have a more give-and-take discussion to see if we can figure out what is going on.

Good luck!
