Feeding small turtle

Question
Someone gave me a very small (about the size of a half-dollar) turtle, green, green striped head with orange stripe on both sides of head.  Is this a small breed or a baby?  What would I feed him/her?  Tried some turtle food, brocolli, carrots (cut to small size) and water, but not eating now.  Not sure if wrong food, too young for solid food, or just scared of the new environment.  Would appreciate any advice on living conditions, feeding, etc.  Thanks!  (can send photo, if would help determine breed)

Answer
Hey there Ken, congradulations on your new friend.

The turtle you are describbing is a red ear slidder. they can live 10 to 15 yrs and some have been reported to live longer than that with great care.

Please do send a pix so I can be 100 percent sure prior to advising care.
I ll respond fast with a picture and al the information
