???red ear slider

are there some that look like red ear sliders but called something else?  we got our 2 at the beach several years ago and they were very little, now they are HUGE.  We are thinking its time for an outdoor pond but not sure if they will survive that enviroment.  Any thoughts on this?

The red slash on the side of the head is pretty distinctive, and sliders are one of the larger pond turtles- females get up to 12" long just on the shell.
