Waterland Tub and Romaine Lettuce

22 16:02:21

Question
I'm getting a small waterland tub for my male southern painted turtle and the water depth is only 6''. I'm wondering if that will be a problem since they like swimming in deep water that is 10-12 inches. Do you think it will work? And i feed him romaine lettuce and he eats alot of it. But all the little lettuce bits gets all around the tank and sometimes in the filter. I would feed him in another container but he is used to getting fed in the tank. Have any advice?

Answer
Justin, Even these amazing little creatures seem so tuff they are so delicate. Since you have taken on the responsibility for this little booger I would say keep that tub for feeding. I would recommend a twenty high at least if you add no one else ...lol The thing he's prob getting most important is the light , that is assuming you have him outside. OK this is the thing I would get a cage top or make one/ Watch for mildew if you homemake it ....He needs a landing to get out of the water they need to shed their lamina.....don't pick it ....it is him or her growing....they need lighting USA/USB . The pet you got into is not easy but will be fine . They make dual lighting for these guys one side UVA light put over dock or a way you make for him to get out of water ..... no wood ....if you use rocks from outside fine just boil them first.....make sure no parasites transfer to your tank the USB on the other side should be over water this is not for the heat as the USA it is for him to create the vitamin D he needs to create calcium ...very important ....so no broken toes , shell probs. You can get a back filter for his water or a turtle filter more expensive made by tetra... but very nice and submersible. You also need to keep tamp about 76 degrees you can get turtle heaters or just put a strip on your tank thermometer strip that is and if you aren't maintaining in winter prob then take care of that submersible for sure already set ones from tetra cheaper. ....Now as far as feeding Romaine is not nutritious enough for them even though they do pick their favorites and try to train you........ you need to take control and give it better variety. Pellets always for vitamin supplement. What I do with my Henrietta is I make a turtle lasagna. Take some mustard or collard greens ....bok choy , layer it add some albacore tuna i guarantee it will love you for years.... abit of romaine and freeze it almost then cut into squares . You will have easy way to spoil your baby .... feed it in that tub....it will poop not long after it eats hopefully .... keeps your tank much cleaner than transfer her or him back. Also In case you were wondering if it was a boy or girl if her tail is short and fat and her nails are long awww don't name her bobby ....lol if her tail is short fat and nails are short its a boy congrats..... If you have any other questions feel free to ask ...Good Luck, Tina
