Substrate and Burrowing

Question
I have a male mali uromastyx. I use reptile carpet as substrate because I am concerned about using any other substrate that my uro could potentially ingest and become impacted from. I know that uros like to hide and burrow so I have provided a few hide boxes. One is on the warm side with a heading pad underneath it (attached on the outside of the glass, not the inside) and the reptile carpet over it. As for burrowing, I am wondering if I should provide something more, he does dig into a fold over in the carpet that is under his favorite hiding spot but I've read that some provide dried potting soil or millet since the uros can actually eat the millet. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi. Please remember that ur uros enclosure should mimic the uros natural environment   The substrate u r using does not exist in the mountainous desert region of Africa. I have been using children's playsand from home depot for twenty years. I've never had any problems.   It holds heat and is easy to clean. I never use any type of heating pad. It's not necessary if u have the proper lighting and a good UVB bulb. Good luck with ur little guy. I hope this helps.

Thank you
Cathy
