Leopard Gecko with abscess

Question
QUESTION: Do you know the dosage for Baytril for a leopard gecko with an abscess?  I have used it before under veterinary supervision but I have lost my job and I am unable to take him in this time.  I know how to drain and treat the abscess and I know that antibiotics need to be given for a month but I don't recall the dosage for the Baytril.  Also where can I get the Baytril...I saw a prior recommendation of yours that suggested a place but I didn't write it down.
Thanks so much!
Becky

ANSWER: Hello Becky,

Sure, I can help you with dosing the Baytril.  Do you know what the concentration of the Baytril is by chance?
Did you need the site to purchase the Baytril too?
Where is the abscess located on your gecko?

QUESTION: I have not purchased the Baytril yet.  Was planning to get it from a site I saw mentioned in one of your prior posts.
The abscess is in the right rear leg.  Not far from where he had an abscess a couple of years ago.  I'm not sure why he gets these, he is blind so his environment is pretty boring.  He is on carpet.
I work part time at a vet (I lost my full time job) but we don't see reptiles so I usually use a local reptile vet but he's pretty expensive.
I'm trying to gather up the funds to take him in but I want to start the abx asap.  I just thought of something!  I think I may have some injectable Baytril left over from a sick dog I had.  I'm going to check on that, I'll let you know if I have the Baytril and if so what mg/ml.
Thanks for getting back to me!

ANSWER: Hello Becky,

Here is the site to buy the Baytril if you need:

I am sorry, he is blind?
How old is the Baytril you have now?  It can go bad after a little while & be rendered inactive.
Most local vets who treat reptiles are expensive.
Did you have any pictures of him?

That is too bad you lost your job.  The economy is horrible right now!
Let me know how he is doing.

QUESTION: Thanks Tracie,  I borrowed some money and took him in last night.  Doc decided on Amoxi.  The abscess in in the underside of his rear leg, kind of like on his butt, but not near his anus.  When it was full it spread into his thigh.  It's a bad abscess, I feel like a bad lizard mommy :(
The vet cleaned it out of course and sent me home with the abx and syringes to clean it.  A couple of years ago when he had an abscess I soaked him and flushed it daily as well as abx and force feeding.  I am headed to the store to get some baby food today after work.
He was born blind.  Pet store I got him from didn't know it of course.  I didn't figure it out for quite a while.  He didn't eat as much as the one I got with him.  I divorced from my ex and left the lizards at his house at first.  When I finally got them to my house I figured out he was blind.  (We bought them in April/May2004 and I moved out in Aug 2004, he finally gave them to me in 2005)  He lives in a very boring tank b/c he doesn't do anything, I take out his hidey rock for him to eat b/c he hunts by sound and I don't want him bumping into it hard when he goes for a cricket.  That's also why I don't understand how he got an abscess.  He is on tank carpet and there is nothing in his tank lol.
I really appreciate your help on this, I really enjoyed reading your posts to other lizard owners.  Do you have any other suggestions for my little Moe man?

Thanks!
Becky

Answer
Hello Becky,

Oh how is he doing today?
I am sorry about the abscess, that is too bad.  I hope the amoxicillin helps him out.
I hope that he likes the baby food, too that should help him out a lot.
He was born blind, really?  Wow, that is sad but I guess he probably has adjusted pretty well then since he was born that way.
That is alright if his tank is very simple that is all he needs anyway.  Maybe a cricket bit him possibly?  Does he eat mealworms, also?
Do you have pictures of him?
That is nice of you to take out the rock hide when he is hunting, does he find his food pretty well?
If he is not eating very well, you can get some non dairy soy yogurt or acidophiliz & mix it in with the baby food to help with his appetite.  Some bee pollen may be helpful for him too with energy & appetite.

Let me know how he is doing.
