Question
hello i have resently perchased a frog from a local pet store and the person that sold it to me didn't tell me what i should feed it. it is only the size of my thumb nail and i don't know what to do!

Answer
Hi Casandra,

All frogs in the pet trade are insectivores/carnivores. If the frog you have is a treefrog or a ground dwelling frog then the staple diet is usually crickets. You will need small ones. The length of the crickets should be the same distance as the width of your frogs head from one eye across to the other.

If you have an aquatic frog such as a African or Dwarf clawed frog then you can offer frozen blood worms or similar frozen food sold for carnivorous fish. There are also pelleted diets sold for aquatic frogs.

If they did not tell you what to feed it then it is likely that they may have left out other important care information as well. Frogs do not take handling very well due to the delicate nature of their skin. If you must handle it, wash and rinse your hands before to remove the natural salts and oils on your hands which can damage your pet's skin. You also need to use treated water for amphibians. The chlorines and chloramines in tap water are toxic to them and will harm them over time. Any aquarium supply store will have various dechlorinators that you can use. A few drops will make your tap water safe.
