Ball Python Injured

Question
Hello, this is Sunday, so there is no one around to take my snake anywhere.. but my cat knocked the tank down, and glass shattered.  Our python was cut badly, and could possibly have glass still in his scales.  this one cut on his belly is so bad, that when he stretches out, you can see his insides.  Is there anything we can do for the time being?  We are desperate here.  I do have a cage that I need to clean out and disinfect for him, I just need to help him though.  We're going crazy.  He's not bleeding, and still moving around, we're just scared.  Thanks.

Jenn

Answer
First off, there should be an emergency vetrinary center somewhere in your area.  Check the phone book and if that doesn't work, you might even try calling Fish and Wildlife or your local zoo to see if they can tell you where to take him.  Any time an animal is badly injured, the vet is your best bet.

However, in the mean time, you might try putting him in a small, opaque rubber made tub so that he will be in the dark and feel secure.  He doesn't need room to move around as this will basically serve a purpose similar to a hide box.  Make sure it is as sterile as you can possibly get it (you might even try using medical guaze to line the box) and keep him there until you can get him to the vet.  If he starts bleeding, products like Quick Stop will staunch the blood flow and can be purchased at most pet stores.  Try to avoid handling him and keep things as quiet as you can.

Best of luck.  I hope he makes it.
