Question
we recently moved and our tortoise keeps pushing through the fence is he trying to return to our previous home? is he looking for a mate he is probably 17 years old. sulcatto

Answer
He could be trying to go home. Sulcata are highly intelligent and he is probably stressed and all turned around now that he's in a totally new environment he doesn't know. Chelonia ( turtles/torts ) are able to navigate long distances using terrain features and even star positions in order to find their home. He could be trying to get to something pretty on the other side of your new fence too, or he could be thinking it's time to find a mate. That's a strong instinct with tortoises when they reach maturity.

Reinforce your perimeter with recessed square post sunk several feet below ground level and extending above ground level so that he can't go over. A content Sulcata is a blessing, but one that is on a mission to break out is a home improvement nightmare!

Do what you can to make the new area familiar like to old ( landscaping, scenery, yard art, whatever you had there ), and add foraging spots, shaded hides, and compost/soil piles to burrow in and keep him occupied too. These things might help reduce his stress and settle him. Given the recent move ( if it was a long time home ) he probably needs some time to hide and adjust to feeling safe in the new environment. Such moves can be very traumatic for reptiles once they have gotten secure somewhere.
