Question
I currently have a 5 ft Boa Constrictor Imperata and am also caring for a Royal/Ball Python (About 10-12) inches while my firend is on vacation and I am utterly confused as to what humidity the inside of each tank should be.  The Python I am caring for (only a few months old) seems to be having problems shedding and I think this may be due to the low humidity conditions it has been subject to.  Can you tell me what the correct humidity for each of these snakes would be, and are there any tricks to keeping the internal humidity up to the correct level.

Answer
The humidity level for each snake is very similar.  Humidity should be around 60-75 I have read some care sheets that have humidity for boas as high as 90 though I think this is unnecessary.

There are several tricks to keeping humidity up.

1. Mist the cage once or twice a day with a spray bottle
2. Provide a large bowl of water under the heat lamp and the water will evaporate thus keeping the ambient humidity up.
3. Use a commercial spray such as tropical mist to boost the humidity a bit or a product like shed ease to assist in the shedding.
4. Provide a hide box with damp moss or damp paper towels so the snake can have one area that may have a higher humidity.

In the meantime if the ball is stuck in a shed I would soak it in warm water for about 15 to 20 minutes to loosen any old shed and gently remove any of the shed.
