Leopard Gecko digging

For the past three nights my son's male leopard gecko has been digging in the sand in the cooler end of his tank.  He is about 8/9 months old, eating, and active.  What does the digging mean?

Are you sure your son's leopard gecko is a male & not a female?  She could be gravid, if it is female.  
Or, if he is constantly digging & you are sure it is male, then, could his tank be too hot?  Does he have an adequate place to cool down in?  
What are the temperatures in the tank?
