Question
Over the past month my boyfriend and i have gone through 3 water dragons (including the one we have now) We have had nothing but problems. When i bought the first one (from petsmart) it was our first WD ever, but we bought a book. It was fine for a few days, but got weaker and weaker. It wouldnt eat anything. Not knowing the dangers of heat rocks we put on in, and put our WD on it. (no more then 5 minutes) All the WD would do it lay on the cage, so when he jumped up we thought it was progress. Over the next 30 seconds it ran around, then turned over on his back. My boyfriend QUICKLY flipped him back over. then he died. We took it back to petsmart in WESTMINSTER, Md then got our money back. Then we went to frederick petmart and got another. (of course we washed the 1'st ones stuff off before putting the other in) she did fine. we fed her small crickets everyday. then all of a sudden she kept her mouth open alot. the temps were fine, and she wasn't thirsty. she also kept one eye closed alot. she didn't have energy. we called a vet, and called petsmart. the guy from petsmart was clueless of what to do, then said a batch on WD's had pink eye and ammonia. so we gave her another day and she didnt improve. we took her back to petsmart (our guarentee was ovr) but they were fast to take it back. (theres a vet inside petmsart) so in a few days i checked back in because we told them we'd like to have her back if she got better. the vet said she couldnt discuss it, and the manager was clueless and said he'd keep in touch. he never did.

then.. we got another one. the biggest one there. (the other petsmart had a huge one but his eye was cloudy and i wasnt sure) but this one looked healthy. she did fine until 4 days ago. she wont eat, she has no energy. we did feed her superworms. but she likes crickets. we take her our of her tank into another to feed her so the crickets dont hide. we have a male, also we got. but we got him from a store called RICKS petstore. hes perfectly healthy. hes fat, and eats ALOT! we quarantined him, but did put them together in the bath. they both were itchy so we bought a parasite remover and he was fine. she however had brown bumps, but dont seem to bother her. they are going away. im not sure if its just her skin. she hasnt shed at all. its been 2 or 3 weeks. shes too interested on whats outside of her tank. My boyfriend is building them a bigger home, and we wanted to have 2. what should i do for her? i took her away from him, in a 20 gallon for a few hours. she has a water dish, and some crickets, and a log to get into. shes loosing weight. she hasnt ate for 3 or 4 days. she has very little energy. she just lays on the bottom all day and keeps her eyes closed. please help.
i dont want her to die. and im deff. not buying anymore from petsmart.

Answer
Hello Kayla, this is very unfortunate.

I usually do not give out this link to everybody but because your situation seems to evolve around petsmart:

**CAUTION CAN BE CONSIDERED GRAPHIC**

http://www.petsmartcruelty.com

Petsmart has a horrible reputation with their animals, especially birds, rodents, reptiles.

Seems like the heat rock did in the first one along with perhaps an existing medical problem. RIP little guy

The second one had a respiratory infection and an eye problem but the RI probably is what caused her to pass. RIP little one

So you have a "male" water dragon who is doing fine?

And a "female" who isn't eating and is lethargic correct?

The cage size has a lot to do with it and temperatures and humidity need to be kept constant and proper.

It sounds like your "female" has internal parasites. I would take her to the vet for a fecal check (not the vet in petsmart)
Take in 2-3 fresh samples of her fecal matter to be examined. Internal parasites causes extreme weight loss, loss of appetite, and stress.

Many reptiles have died from parasites so a fecal check is usually the first thing to do when purchasing a new reptile.

I am going to suggest you read:

http://www.triciaswaterdragon.com

That site has very helpful information and is what got me started in water dragons.

I am also going to suggest you go to

http://www.repticzone.com
and become a member. I am frequently on there (everyday that I can) and a lot of other helpful and friendly people are there as well. Together I am sure we can all figure out what is the problem and which way to go about fixing it.

Let them know Yexalen reffered you to come and explain your situation.

I am also thinking if this dragon doesn't make it (I am keeping her in my thoughts and hope she does pull through) that you need to find a captive bred water dragon. Most pet store water dragons are caught from the wild and they have many medical and other issues such as the ones you are describing.

Good luck
Yexalen
