QuestionHi Pam,
I've had my Egyptian uromastyx now for a couple months, he was a rescue from a local graigslist ad. The previous owner had him for a couple a year or so and was moving out of state. He didn't want to take him, that's where I come in.
I have him in a 3ft tank which appears to be a 40 breeder, this was given to me with the uro. The previous owner was only using a ceramic heater and uv bulb on the tank. So I went ahead and purchased a 150w zoomed halogen bulb for one corner and have it around 120f or so according to my digital temp gun. and rest of the tank gradients to around 80-85f.
He eats well, feeding him mustard greens.. bok choy, collard greens. He wants to eat everday, well here's where my Q comes in. I noticed the other day that the very end of his tail is getting a bit on the dark side. Like a burnt look. But it's just the tip.. I'm a bit concerned, he's a very cool lizard. I know I he needs a bigger tank which I'm working on right now.. was looking at a 6ft long visiontank. Was considering keeping him outdoors durning the summer here in So Cal. Thanks for any help!!
Regards,
-Dave
Answer Even though Southern California enjoys a hot summer, it's not hot enough for a uro to stay outside without supplemental heating, although natural sun is wonderful for him. And during rain, he really has to come in.
I think the tail should be seen by a good reptile vet as soon as possible to rule out injury, and possible gangrene or other infection.
