Question
Hello Pam,
I have had my bearded dragon bubba for a 1 1/2 years however the kid i got him put him at about 7 years old now.  he started off eating crickets just fine along with his greens (collards, mustards, dandelions, and, turnips) later he stopped eating crickets and would only eat superworms along with his greens then he went to just hornworms and no greens to the point we are at now and that is nothing at all i would say in the past month he has eaten maybe 1 cup of greens, all he does is sleep, he doesn't bask unless i put him on the rock, and he just looks sad (well to me anyway) his temps always read between 100-110 on the basking side and his cooler side is always 90-93 the uvb/uva light gets changed every six months and he is able to get within 6 inches of it i have taken him to the vet twice for this problem and they say he is brumating thats fine if he is but as far as i know brumation is when they slow down on everything but they don't stop eating all together Dec 1st he went to the vet and he weighed 320 grams just yesterday i weighed him and he was 294 grams that tells me something is wrong with him sorry for rambling but im nervous for him im tempted to change his vet but the one he goes to is the closest one to us and thats still an hour away so that mean bubba is without heat for at least 3 hours and with all the snow we have been getting in new jersey its not good for him to be outside in it any advice you have would be appreciated thank you Tabitha

Answer
Brumation can mean not eating at all.  I have beardies that sleep from September to February with nothing but a little water every few weeks.  So relax, he is doing what is natural, I'm giving you an article on Brumation by a expert and good friend that will give you a good idea of the various ways beardies do wintertime.
