Hello,

we have a white rex.  She's about 3 years old.  We just noticed that a portion of her tail is completley hairless, showing pink.  There is hair at the very end of her tail...kind of like a manicured "poodle tail".  Currently we're monitoring more closely how she is eating as well as her droppings.  We're not sure how much of her eating habits has changed since we now have noticed the condition of her tail.
Answer -
Is she perhaps shedding, and that's why the fur is missing?  Is the tail more red or pink?  Flakey, or smooth?  Does she perhaps have urine burn on her underside, and the tail could also have urine burn?

There's several causes for a tail to be missing fur, I can't really tell you what is causing it at this time.

Kim

Hello Kim,
Thanks for your reply.  She is shedding in general.  But that tail portion is the most drastic - to the skin.  And we just noticed that this exposure is gradual up to to the bottom back.  The exposed skin is sort of both pinkish/redish in color.

What is urine burn?  Her bottom is what we think is "stained" from sitting in her litter box.  We change her litter box daily.  Should we consult a vet at this time?

Answer
Urine burn is where the skin on her bottom is red, rather like diaper rash.  The fur would generally be falling out, or appear extremely yellow and matted.  She would look and smell like she needs a bath.

If that's the case, you might try putting Desitin (you can get it in the baby section of a store, it's a diaper rash ointment) on her tail and bathe just that area (rabbits don't like baths in general) with just warm water.

If you are concerned, certainly take her to the vet.  Or, you can try this treatment and see if the issue is resolved.

Good luck.

Kim
