Fur off rabbits foot got ripped off

Question
My bunny's foot got caught under a chair with wheels, he pulled and his fur was ripped off. We can see his nail and there was a little blood. My husband put polisporn on it...I asked him to take it off. What can we do to help the bunny? The rip is more on top of his foot.(The fur is about the size of a looney)    Thank you, Kimberly.

Answer
Dear Kimberly,

If you can see raw tissue and/or bones and tendons in the wound, then you must get your bunny to a good rabbit vet immediately to have the wound properly disinfected and sutured shut.  The shallow skin on the foot renders it vulnerable to infection into the bones if the underlying tissue is exposed, so I would not treat this lightly.  Please find a good rabbit vet here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

and get her in for examination and treatment ASAP.

I don't know what a "looney" is, so I can't guess the size of the wound.  But if the skin is completely gone, then the bunny must be seen by a vet for the wound to be properly dressed.  If not, infection and necrosis could quickly set in, and in the worst case scenario, he could lose the foot.  I can't see the injury, so I don't know how serious it is. But if you're writing for help, I'm guessing it's bad enough to alarm you. That means:  get him to the vet now.

I hope this helps. Please write back if you have any other questions.

P.S. - Unfortunately, you've now had firsthand experience with how easily rabbits can be injured by moving furniture of many kinds...not just wheeled chairs.  If you have a bunny around, always look before you step, roll a chair, or move any piece of furniture.
