Housing a rabbit

Question
Tara,

I have a couple questions.  I recently adopted a 1 1/2 year old rabbit from the local Humane Society.  I've been reading up on what is good and what isn't good.  I've heard that wire cages are not good for their feet and to put a piece of wood in there.  I tried this and placed the wood where the rabbit loved to lay and the rabbit automatically slept on the wire part outside of where the wood was placed.  So I in turn, took the wood out and she automatically went back to her favorite place (where the wood used to be).  How to I get her to like the wood?  I don't want her to be uncomfortable.  Also, when I adopted her she was litterbox trained and first when I put the litter box in she automatically picked it up with her teeth and flipped it upside-down. So I took it out and then realized that maybe I had it at the wrong spot so I put it at another corner and she now only will kind of "shake" it after going to the bathroom.  My question is is it normal after a rabbit uses her litterbox to eat some of the "pills" that she leaves behind?  I didn't want her to get sick and wasn't sure who to ask.  Thanks for your help.  Emily

Answer
Hello Emily

Get her a cage without a wire bottom, wire bottomed cages are used for oudoor housing are you housing your rabbit outside? if so go get an indoor cage indoor rabbits are more freindly and are much more fun. Try sucuring the cage side with some wire or something so she cant move it, yes it is normal for them to eat there poop and this is why some litters should be avoided because they wil eat there poop out of the litter pan and the litter may stick to it and then they end up swolling it and this can cause inpaction. Tip: Rabbits get hair balls and therefore need rabbit/cat hair ball remidee fed to them once a week.
