Question
thank you, that helped, there is a box, but the first and second one she either didnt give birth to them in the box or removed them. shortly after emailing you i found 6 more in the box, so i put the alive one that wasnt in there with them. why do you think she separated them. now all 7 are in the box, but one of them keeps going to the opposite corner as the rest, is this an ok thing?  there is also a little hay in there that they are getting under, is this ok? the box i have has been used by a breeder that has been breeeding for his whole life and just had a going out of buisness retiring sale, and I am wondering how the mother feeds them and everything in such a small space? there tummies liiked real full and i tried distracting her with an orange, thank you very much

Question -
I have ALOT of questions. This is my first time breeding and yesterday my rabbit gave birth to one rabbit in the morning.  Throughout the day I saw the mother laying on the baby, I was afraid she was smothering it.  Is that just a normal thing, what should I do?  I left her alone all night, I came back this morning and the first baby was dead and outside of the cage, but still on the tray that goes under it (i have and oversized tray, and the cage isnt lifted above the tray). The baby was in a little bit of spilled water outside of the cage, do you think it crawled out and got wet and cold and died, or died and the mother was getting rid of it? After I removed the dead on and placed a towel on the part of the tray that the cage isnt on, just in case another one walks out or something, I saw another baby laying in the cage. Is it normal for them to have babies so far apart? When I tried to touch the second baby to "inspect" it (I read on a web site that it is good to inspect it, I dont really know what to look for, what should i be looking for?) the mother clawed at my hand, why do you think she did this? After that I left her for two hours and came back and the alive rabbit baby was on the towel on the tray. Please help me!
thank you.

Hello Brad

She needs a nest box when she has babys a cardboard box with a hole big enough for her to get in but thehole should be an inch or two from the bottom of the box so the babys dont fall out, also put some tore up newspaper it in and place the baby in it, the mother cant pick her babys up so once there born in that spot she cant move them, she clawed you because she ahs just had babys and she thinks you are going to hurt them becareful next time you go near the babys because if she bites you it will hurt quite a bit try to distract her with a carrot or something while yuo tend to the baby, check the baby and see if its belly is full looking and if it is warm if it isnt you can either leave it in the nest box for her to tend or take it out and handfeed it kitten milk replacement feed only whats derectied by a vet thou and keep it in a box with the lid partly closed and maybe a heating pad set on low/meduim at one end to keep it warm if the house is cold. Also the mother only feeds her babys once or twice aday so she may look like she not caring for them, so if you are handfeeding them only feed once or twice daily.

Answer
Hello again Brad and your welcome

Yes it is normal for her to not be in the box because as I told you she only feeds them once or twice daily so doesnt stick to them all day like a dog or cat, its fine if the babys are covered with a little hay because they need to keep warm normaly the mother pulls fur out to keep them warm but some dotn and they just cover them with newspaper or hay, how big is the nest box? what breed of rabbit do you have? The nest box must be large enough for the mother to get in, turn around and get back out easily, the mother doesnt need to lie down to feed her babys instead she hunches over them.
