Question
Hi i have two male bunnies who have been together since birth and are brothers,
they have been fine up to now and had seemed to have bonded. They are now 5
months old and are starting to mount each other one more aggressively than the
other, i have read up on this and some say seperate them and others say do not,
what should i do?? they are not neuted will this solve the problem???

Answer
Hi Nicola,

You have done your research....you have two boys that are feeling their oats..so to speak.  Their hormones are raging and they are determining dominance.  It is generally difficult to keep unaltered males together due to the territorial issues.  It's not impossible as we do have two separate pairs of males that are bonded and they have not been neutered....one pair due to a health issue and the other pair recently came in from an abuse case.  I would highly suggest having them neutered.  It will over time reduce the territorial concerns....and that includes spraying urine all over the place....it's smelly and hard to clean.  It will result in a more docile rabbit.  It might take a few weeks to purge the hormones so the quicker it's done, the quicker the purge.  It will also eliminate the possibility of testicular cancer....and we have a survivior in our rescue.

Keep in mind that all vets can't do rabbits.  Rabbits present some concerns much different than dogs or cats.  In the hands of a rabbit savvy vet, neuters are now quite safe.

I would prefer to keep them together if at all possible.  Once they are separated, the bond is sometimes totally broken especially with same sex pairs.  But on the other hand, rabbit fights can get nasty and cause injuries.  I would get them neutered as soon as possible.
