Question
Hello, I have found a person selling mini rex X new zelands, my question is with these two normaly gental breeds being crossed together should they be extra friendly? aren't the larger breeds calmer then the smaller ones? also what exactly is "blue"? she said she has some of these along with tan, light & dark brown, black spots on a white backround and pure black.... is tan just a really pale brown?

Answer
I am not crazy about crossing the mini rex with any other breed.  The greatest quality of the mini rex and rex breeds is their soft, dense fur and when you cross them with other breeds that is the first thing to be diluted.  In general, yes, larger breeds are calmer than the smaller ones, but that is really when you start talking about dwarfs not mini's (there are major differences).  My specialty is the mini rex and I refuse to dilute the breed with any other breed.  While I have Netherlands, dutches, and large meat breeds each has its own purpose and I avoid crossing any of them.  The mini rex is a great pet breed as well as a super show breed and calm enough without being diluted.  Here are a couple of links to good sites that explain the colors and gives photos to show what each is.

If you are looking for a nice rabbit for a pet and are willing to spend $20 or so, you should have no problem finding a purebred mini rex (maybe not show quality, but a nice one).  All of mine are $25 and under.  Don't pay more than $5 or $10 for a mix breed and avoid pet store bunnies.
