Question
What is the cause of abcesses or large blister like pimples on y bunny's abdomen? Pus oozes from them and they are raw and scarring. Can this be cured and or prevented?

Also, is newspaper OK to use as bedding? My rabbits chews it. Thanks.

Sid

Answer
Dear Sid,

Without seeing it, I can't be sure.  But if you have a female bunny who is not spayed, it's likely that she has mastitis (infection of the mammary glands).  This needs immediate diagnosis and treatment by a good rabbit vet, and you can find one close to you here:

www.rabbit.org/care/vets.html

If she's not spayed, she is likely to suffer from false pregnancies repeatedly, and this can lead to mastitis, uterine cancer, and other very serious health problems.  Please get her to a good rabbit vet ASAP for treatment.

Newspaper isn't very good as bedding.  We use 100% cotton bath mats with rubber backing if they're on the floor.  No backing if the mat is in a hutch.  These will probably need to be laundered regularly, so keep several on hand.

Litterbox filler is best if it's pelleted sawdust such as Feline Pine or other similar product.  This absorbs odor, kills bacteria, and may help prevent infections like what you describe, if they are due to contact dermatitis.

In any case, your bunny needs to be seen by a vet and NOW.  Please write back if you have any other questions.
